Description
Behold!
The Orbit Model T Preamp is not your ordinary Sunn Model T clone. It is an all-in-one booster, preamp, toneshaper, distorter, and overdriver with fuzz-range potential. This pedal is highly responsive not only to your playing dynamics, but also to whatever pedal that goes in front of it, pushing your instrument into another dimension of doom tonal quality.
In The Beginning…
Your input signal is split in two and fed into parallel, tube-amp emulating gain channels—Normal and Bright—for a complete range of grittiness perfect for when you want to add some dirt into your signal. The bassier Normal channel brings out the boom from the low end of your instrument’s frequency range. The Bright channel produces more treble, great for highlighting the added harmonics of your dirt pedals. Together, the two add a subtle compression that works beautifully when the Orbit is used as an always-on pedal at the end of your signal chain.
Fire and Ice
Unlock Fire and Ice modes with the Gain footswitch, which toggles between two incredible gain ranges by overdriving (or backing off from) the circuit’s internal gain stages. The gain ranges are denoted by the pedal’s indicator LED changing its colors. Ice mode (with its blue LED) produces a cooler overdrive, and is great for players who love low-gain overdrives, and for stacking multiple gain pedals in series. Fire mode (i.e., the LED goes red) gives you hotter distortion tones, for those who want nothing more than to blast their amps and scorch the earth behind them.
Tone Shaping
The gain stages are immediately followed by a passive Fender-style tone stack for intuitive and unique toneshaping capabilities, with three controls to help you modify your frequency response. Note that the mid frequency range on a stock Fender tone stack is naturally scooped, and is highly responsive to the Bass and Treble control. With the Treble almost all the way down, the mid scoop starts to appear at about 2 kHz, with a considerable bump in the bass. As the Treble increases, the mid scoop can reach ranges of 400–550 Hz, with the Mid knob simultaneously controlling both the range and amount of scoop. A somewhat flat response can be achieved with the Bass and Treble controls almost all the way down and the Mid control around center.
Get Loud
To compensate for the tone stack’s natural tendency to reduce the signal output gain, a clean volume boost has been integrated at the last stage of the circuit. This allows for greater flexibility in using the Orbit as a lower-gain overdrive by simply lowering the Gain controls while increasing the Volume.
